The Madison Medical Service began April 1, 1972 with an International ambulance and a seven member staff. The Madison Medical Service now responds to over four hundred calls a year with two fully equipped modular ambulances and a staff with 130 years of combined experience in emergency medical care.

The Madison Medical Services has always taken pride in providing Lake County with the most current emergency care available. In 1977 the original International ambulance was replaced with a more roomy type 3 Chevrolet modular ambulance.  In the same year the ambulance staff, along with concerned citizens, solicited funds to purchase one of the first Jaws of Life within the state of South Dakota.  With an increasing demand for transport of patients to larger facilities another milestone was bridged when a second ambulance was purchased in 1981. In 1984, we purchased and received training in the use of a Heart Aide. This was one of the first automatic defibrillators in South Dakota. Both ambulances are now equipped for cardiac and trauma advanced life support emergencies. This equipment includes cardiac monitors, intubation equipment and IV drugs. An automatic blood pressure cuff was acquired in 1990 which was replaced with a new model in 1995 that included a pulse oximeter. A Pediatric Trauma board and pediatric transport seat was also added in 1995.

            Present vehicles are a 1996 Ford Modular 3 and a  2002 Ford Modular 3.
